Highland Cow

Highland cattle originated in the Highlands and western isles of Scotland and were first mentioned in the 6th century AD. Unlike groups of cattle which are called a herd a group of highland cattle is called a ‘Fold’ named after the stone structure called Folds that wee built to shelter them from the weather. Their unusual and distinctive hairy coat makes them well suited to the harsh cold and wet conditions of the Scottish Highlands.
